What Makes Us Human?

A question that has been asked every since the existence of human civilization; What makes us different?

Do we have larger brains? Are we smarter, stronger, faster? The average person would probably say that it is our intelligence that makes us different than other animals. We have the ability to create complicated machinery, think abstractly and are adaptable to almost every situation. These things are all true, but I feel like there is one aspect of humanity that may be neglected by most. That is, emotion.

Sure, emotion is definitely not unique to humans. Many other animals can feel complex emotions like frustration, sadness, and empathy. However, I feel that the emotion of empathy is something that we as humans need to exercise even more than before.

Throughout this past year and a half, Covid-19 has brought many sad things. But it has also given us perspective. The pandemic was a time to reflect on ourselves, what we have done, who we love, who we hate and who we want to be. Through the traumatic events of the pandemic, I and many others have learned to appreciate the people around me more and become more empathetic to those in different situations.

In this week's episode, I invite Atharv Agrawal, co-host of the Different Boats Same Storm podcast to chat about: Being Grateful, Having Perspective and Making Your Mark on the World.
